]]> Tue, 26 Mar 2019 03:05:28 GMT UT - Big Cottonwood/ Mill D - Cabin Permit for Sale https://www.nationalforesthomeowners.org/forums/posts.aspx?topic=1858660 https://www.nationalforesthomeowners.org/forums/posts.aspx?topic=1858660 We have just decided that we need to sell our improvements on a Forest Service lot located in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah.  This has been a very difficult decision for our family and we hope to sell this permit to a family who will build their dream cabin.  The location is fantastic - only 30 minutes from Salt Lake City and the access road is entirely paved.  The lot has access to water and sewer and internet will be available in the next year.  Access to the lot by vehicle is generally possible from May to October, and the backcountry skiing off the lot is world-class.  Mill D is one of the best backcountry routes in the entire Wasatch Front.  

 

The lot has an old foundation from a cabin that was destroyed several years ago and we currently have a permit to remove the old foundation in preparation for a new cabin construction.  The Forest Service Recreation Residence Supervisor is very good to work with.  The photos don't do it justice - so if you are serious then please contact me and we will arrange a time to meet at the Lot and I can provide all the details.

We are a family of 4 looking for a cabin within 1-2 hours of Truckee, CA.  We love the Lost Sierra area, the Hwy 88 corridor, & Echo Lake areas, and are open to anywhere we could go that’s not too terribly far away (we have an infant so being in the car too long is … tough!).

I first learned about forest service cabins about 9 years ago when doing a backpacking trip that started at Echo Lake, and have dreamt of one ever since.  The idea was rekindled last year when my 5yo daughter and I did a mom / daughter weekend at Silver Lake (off 88) and had the best time in the cabin in the woods we rented (Kit Carson Lodge).

Erik & Ashley here in Oregon.  We lost our cabin in the Willamette National Forest near Detroit, OR in the 2020 wildfires.

It was a very special, sacred spot on Devils Creek & the Breitenbush River.  We have been told we cannot rebuild on our lot post-fire (sigh)...  

 

Thus, we are seeking to purchase a cabin along a creek, river or lake somewhere in Oregon or Washington.  We value quietude in nature so much.  We steward the land around us and are very interested in being proactive in fire prevention.
