Retention of Cabin Fees by the Forest Service

The Cabin Fee Act includes a provision that after 10 years the fees we pay to the Forest Service would be retained by the Forest for recreation residence program administration. Is that true? Does NFH think that will happen? What is NFH doing about it?

Yes, it’s true. It’s the law! Beginning in the year 2025, the new law directs all program receipts (fees) to be retained by the Forest Service to support the recreation residence program, and other recreation programs. The annual program revenues (>$30 million/year) will go a long ways toward supporting our program. NFH plans to influence how those funds are allocated and used within the agency, though we have no actual say in Forest Service budget matters. As we get closer to that time, we will solicit ideas and suggestions from our membership to share with the Forest Service.

Yes! Miriam Mazel, of USFS, this morning said it will go to them and they already have rec groups circling. But she did say they will likely hire staff to help with the re-permitting process in 2028.
