Most of the cabins in our tract are historic and many are interested in becoming an historic district according to a designation in the National Register of Historic Places. What are the pros and cons of getting listed as a "district"? Would this offer protection from the Forest Service as far as removal of cabins or reducing the number of structures?

I think it's wonderful that you are considering becoming an historic "district" under the National Register of Historic Places designation. A few point to keep in mind: Not all the cabins in the tract or vicinity need to be included. Some may opt out, and that is fine. There is always strength in numbers when dealing with the Forest Service or government agencies, such as the county. And yes such a designation would inhibit the FS from removing or reducing structures. I strongly urge you to contact your State Historical Preservation Office (SHPO) for advice on how to proceed and ask them to recommend a consultant with experience in Historic districts for you to work with..

I too have a somewhat similar question regarding the designation of Historical status to a cabin. Is the NFS not requiring us to have Historical status? I am being told I need to replace our old crumbling chimney the same as it was before rather than removing the chimney and repairing the log wall where the chimney was as it has been designated as Historical. This I am unaware of.

The Forest Service is required to conduct a study of all cabins to determine if they have historical significance or not. While many cabins have been determined to be historic, some are not. Some have not been evaluated, so the historic status is undetermined. If your cabin has been determined to be historic, as a general rule, you will be required to maintain the historic appearance when making repairs or improvements. It's not impossible to do something like remove a chimney while repairing a cabin, but it's probably more difficult to obtain approval unless you can show it's would not detract from the cabin's historical significance. I suggest you confirm the historic status of your cabin by obtaining a copy of evaluation study from the local district office before taking any further action.
