For some reason, our ranger has recently raised an objection to the sign marking entry into our tract...a sign that has been in place for more than 25 years. The lone road into our tract is a very, very narrow one with no outlet and the sign has been a big help in tamping down turnarounds, double parking on the shoulders, cars blocking access to cabins, etc. etc. As it happens, there is a vast parking area just outside the entrance to our tract, so there is ample space for visitors to leave their cars and walk the 1/8 mile in to our lake shore. As our tract president, I'm preparing a document to formally request approval of the sign so that we don't have to remove it. I'm just wondering if Doug or any other tracts have encountered this issue in the past and have any insight into it that might prove helpful as I prepare my response to them. Thanks much in advance for any POVs.

As a suggestion, you might ask what the USFS concern is about the sign.

Typically, there is resistance to putting up a sign on someone's lot, but I've seen a few road signs that point to cabin tracts and are not located on a cabin lot. You might let the ranger know that you have resource, security and emergency response concerns if they remove the sign. Most importantly, I would suggest you contact your local fire dept and ask them if this will impede emergency services. If so, they might help shore up your argument against the removal of the sign. If you still don't get a helpful response, you might want to take it up the chain and go to the Forest Supervisor's office to ask for assistance. Hope you can explain your concerns and be heard.

Thanks much, Sharon. I've actually got a letter from our town's fire chief being drafted that does precisely what you suggest. And I was fortunate to learn that our sister tract at Silver Lake has a letter from the USFS authorizing their entry sign, which has almost exactly the same wording as ours. So I feel like I have a decent set of arguments. I'll let you know how it goes. Jordan

I assume the objection to the sign is the "Homeowner Access Only" phrase. As a general rule, the Forest Service encourages Tract entrance signs and for most tracts, the Forest Service provides the entrance sign. Because our permits are a non-exclusive use of the land, the Forest Service frowns upon any sign that appears to restrict or discourage general public access. As a compromise, you may need to consider revising that phrase to something the Forest Service won't objective to. I've seen signs that read "Cabins are private property of the owner under permit from the Forest Service" or something similar to identify the cabins as private property, but avoids the appearance of restricting public access to the land.
