Chris,

I'm sure there are other associations that carry insurance for their water systems, but it might take some time for them to respond. You may want to ask our partners at Assurance Risk Managers for additional info or quotes (see Marketplace->Cabin Insurance Program, though asking around for other associations' referrals is ideal. Hopefully, others will have suggestions, as well.

There are certainly other cabin associations with shared water systems, possibly in other forests or states. Some will be shared with a campground, others with a lodge. One of the losses we have seen after a fire has been to shared infrastructure such as water systems so you are wise to seek out some coverage.

Thanks for the question.
Sharon Leach, NFH Executive Director

I'm the president of an up to 53 cabin water system. We had insurance through Assurance Risk Managers. They found insurance through Tokio Marine.
The system was destroyed by the Caldor fire. The insurance is pretty much covering the losses. The last premium we paid (2021 before the fire) was about $1,500 for about $25,000 in coverage. Over the years if we had just banked the $ we spent on insurance we'd be money ahead. As far as liability depending on your organization's structure you might only be risking whatever reserves you have (you'd need legal advice to make sure the people running it are insulated from the organization, e.g. someone wanting to sue for something can't go after the individuals running the organization and can only go after the organization's assets).

The insurance seems to be for much bigger systems with parking lots, playground equipment, lots of buildings, employees, computers, etc.

I will say the process of getting payouts from the insurance for the fire loss has been easy. Not much more than a quote or receipts and they pay.

I realize you are looking for someone who supplies spring water to both private and public and we don't meet that but...
