We are starting the process for re-roofing our cabin in the Los Padres. I would like some input on what to expect when it comes time to contact the USFS - what information do they need/want? The plan is for fireproofing with metal, in a dark green color. Do they require pre-approval of materials, color, etc. There is no county permit required, as I already checked with the county. The company I will be using is a local fully licensed roofing contractor. is there a specific form to be submitted to the USFS office?

I have read a number of comments from other members and although I have learned a few things, none are specific to this particular forest. The home was built in 1967 and is not designated historic.

Would it be helpful to obtain the Region 5 handbook? if so, how do i go about obtaining a copy?

Thank you.

Cheryl

Cheryl,
We are in Cleveland National Forest. We need USFS approval prior to doing anything to the exterior of the cabin, including roofing. At a Fire Safe Council Meeting we were given ideas for cabin siding and roofing that would make the cabin more firesafe - with the stipulation that it must be approved by the Forest Service first.

Good luck. Can you contact your Permit administrator and ask?

Thanks
Bunny

Cheryl,

It's always best to show the Forest Service your plan first. Depends on roof materials and whether or not you are making any size changes. For the most part in California, you can replace any roof type with a metal roof. Your color choice sounds like it makes sense. Yes, you will need to get materials, design and color approved before you start work. If you send me your email, I can send you the Region 5 handbook.

Thanks!
Sharon
