RE-Roofing

We are starting the process for re-roofing our cabin in the Los Padres. I would like some input on what to expect when it comes time to contact the USFS - what information do they need/want? The plan is for fireproofing with metal, in a dark green color. Do they require pre-approval of materials, color, etc. There is no county permit required, as I already checked with the county. The company I will be using is a local fully licensed roofing contractor. is there a specific form to be submitted to the USFS office?

I have read a number of comments from other members and although I have learned a few things, none are specific to this particular forest. The home was built in 1967 and is not designated historic.

Would it be helpful to obtain the Region 5 handbook? if so, how do i go about obtaining a copy?

First of all, you will need to obtain permission from the USFS to replace the roof. Because your cabin is not considered historic, a standing seam metal roof of an appropriate color should be no problem to obtain approval for replacing. Typically, approvals for roof replacements focus on material and color. Dark green is typically an acceptable color. Some forests have created forms for submitting requests to make improvements to a cabin, but many have not. Contact your permit administrator for guidance on how to submit your request. You can also request a R5 handbook which contains construction and maintenance guidelines, among other things from your permit administrator.
