Discussion among our Board Members of how best to document location of our water system that supplies water to cabins. Our Association has 2 paper maps with location of all outlined. Topic came up to move to electronic documentation. A Board member had a Garmin and proposed this. Lots of questions to say the least as the proposal is to move from paper to electronic. Do any of your organizations use Garmin or another electronic tool. Pros/Cons. Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

It looks like nobody has the experience or others may have missed the question. I'd like to suggest that if your group would like to map the water system using GPS technology, it's a great idea. I'm sure that many things on the National Forests have been or are being mapped by GPS. At the same time, your paper map will likely serve you for the purposes you have in mind. For example, by scanning the map, you could print a copy, add notes about repairs and keep a new scan of the paper map. I don't much about the specific Garmin tool, but you'd definitely need some kind of software to take the GPS data and generate a map. Maybe you can find software online. Many small municipalities and so forth likely use online tools or consumer software to generate maps.

Good luck with your project - let us know how it goes!
Sharon Leach, NFH Executive Director

If you have one drawn by hand just scan it into a file and get a copy to all of your participants including the Forest.. Larger copies can be scanned at a local shop.

Our system was original to the 1930s, but was upgraded so we made sure all of our maps were scanned and put on file. We added on a water tank and refiled a new map with that. Make sure your maps go with each permittees Operation and Maintenance filings. Make surer all cabin owners get a copy because the Forrest loses things.
