We are new forest homeowners. We have just begun renovations and cleanup.

My question is about occupancy limits. This is not our main residence and we will mostly be here during the winter. Is there a limit to the time we can spend at the cabin? We will need several months right now for renovations.

I am finding conflicting information about this online.

While there is a minimum occupancy requirement (15 days/year), there is no maximum occupancy limit for using your cabin. As you mention, the permit holder is required to maintain a primary residence elsewhere and if challenged by the USFS, required to provide proof of a primary residence that is not their cabin. There are no issues with staying at a cabin for months at a time.
