We are new to the cabin ownership (three years) and Forestry has marked several large trees near our cabin to sell to logging operations. Last week the logging company was five miles from us, but will most likely be on us soon. As we well know, logging companies basically rape the forest and leave a ton of debris and torn up land. What requirements and liabilities do the logging operation have? We have a gated loop road of ten cabins. What should we expect?

You can review the contract that the logging company signed by going to your National Forest web site (or I suppose stopping in person at any office on your NF) and looking for "Timber Sales". Within the contract (probably over a hundred pages long with all the requirements and liabilities) there are two sections it sounds like you're most concerned about, CT 6.87 "Slash Disposal Measures" and CT 6.24 "Site Specific Protection Measures". These will vary state by state and from one National Forest to another (I'm in Minnesota).

The end results have varied by Forest and state. In the reply above from D. Hansen, he explained how the process works in Minnesota. Additionally, if you are in or near the footprint of a fire then the logging objectives, commercial value, and end result are different from those who are not. I am in California within the footprint of a fire. We are still needing hazard trees removed.

This Ask The Community Forum is does not target a specific locale. If you have a means of emailing other cabins in your Forest and state, their experience and knowledge may be more relevant to your specific situation.
