Our cabin sits on a pond. We would like to dredge the pond as sediment is filling it in. The USFS uses the pond for a water source during fire season. Any suggestions on how to approach the USFS to get a Yes to dredging the pond to it original depth. It is a man-made pon that was created over 100 years ago. Kristin

Hi Kristin,

To "brainstorm" this question...

Is the pond within the lines of your USFS Permit?
As the pond is 100 years old, is it identified in any way on the USFS permit language ?
Is the pond just a visual asset for your tract, or is it used as a water source?
Does the pond "outflow" into a different downstream water source... which may make is more of a challenge around the downstream silt mitigation question that may come up.

Not knowing all the answers above, my thought is to first, put a proposal together that you can discuss with the USFS representative to identify access, scope and end result. Basically a Who, What, When, Where and Why discussion.

Key may be to include an estimate on the current water storage vs. the end result water storage, to help the positioning of fire water use.

Meet with the FS and discuss as a potential win / win.

This is just a start of longer conversation of how the FS views the request.

Steven Reed
