2018 Board of Director Candidates
BOARD OF DIRECTOR CANDIDATES (4 Candidates to be elected)

Karen Shea, Kenmore, WA

Jackpine Tract, WY; Bridger-Teton NF

Family owned cabin, 40 years; 9-year NFH Member

Qualifications and Experience:  My name is Karen Shea and I would like to represent you as a member of the NFH Board. My parents bought our cabin in 1977 and like many of you, I have fond memories growing up spending summers with family and friends exploring the wonders of nature, all enabled by our cabin experience. My cabin has always been a magical place for me! About 5 years ago, my husband and I bought the cabin from my parents so those kinds of experiences can be secured for the next generation and beyond. By profession, I have a financial background. Among other things, I have been involved in several successful startup ventures; owned a nature photography gallery; past Board member of Seattle Audubon Society; a volunteer at the wildlife branch of PAWS; a children’s book author focused on heightening the awareness of children to their natural surroundings; and am Vice President of the Wyoming Cabin Association.

As a NFH Board member, I will be dedicated to focusing on the issues that most affect you and your unique investment. Having the federal government as our landlord can be challenging, and being a resident under this exclusive and rare program has its responsibilities. Striking a working balance is key to the long-term viability of our programs. I am not afraid to tackle the tough issues and pride myself on having good strategic insight that has served me well throughout my career. I appreciate this opportunity to be of service to this important organization.

Richard “Kim” Stiles, Yakima, WA

Boot Jack Tract, (Rimrock Cabin Owners Association) WA; Okanogan-Wenatchee NF

Family owned cabin, 55 years; 15-year NFH Member

Qualifications and Experience: I am interested in running for a position on the NFH of Board Of Directors in 2018. I believe I can perform as a Director to further the mission of the National Forest Homeowners in forward years. The Cabin program is a pillar of American life and I will work to preserve it and the interests of all National Forest Homeowners.

Qualifications  I have thirty years of experience as a professional Firefighter. 24 Years as a Captain in a leadership position. I have served as an officer within the Rimrock Cabin Owners Association, Four years as President and previous to that, four years as Vice President. My Father owned our Cabin since 1962 when I was Four years of age. I now own our Cabin with two of my siblings. Cabin Life has been my life. I have extensive Governmental experience working for the US Department of Energy. Through the daily process of working with bureaucracy, I have learned to predict accurately how a Government agency will act and react.

Nancy Hughes Coe, Memphis TN

Bear Creek Lake Tract, AR; Ozark-St. Francis NF

Family owned cabin, 65 years; 15-year NFH Member

Qualifications and Experience: I have been going to our family cabin with my parents and grandmother since I was 1 month old. I am now enjoying it with my grandchildren! Five generations of memories have cemented my soul to this sanctuary. I appreciate the work on NFH and want to do my share to insure that the cabin program thrives for many more years.

I was on the Board of our very active cabin owners’ association for many years, President for two, and spent more than a decade working on an unsuccessful land exchange with the USFS and various political representatives.

My career is as a financial advisor but I enjoy volunteering in many ways. I am on the executive boards of several organizations such as the Symphony, a Community Foundation, a study center and my church.

My greatest joy is to be outdoors for running, cycling, hiking, skiing, or canoeing.

Richard Maycock, Roswell, GA

Trial Lake Tract, UT; Uinta-Wasatch-Cache NF
Family owned cabin, 91 years; 10-year NFH Member

BS Economics, MBA Finance, University of Utah; Member USAF Reserve

Qualifications and Experience:

Professional: Director of international financial planning and analysis at Corning and Xerox, corporate director of long range planning at Union Pacific and Texaco, vice president of marketing and business development for a multi-national heavy equipment manufacturer in the forest products industry, and senior vice president of a world-wide investment banking firm. Recruited for the project management team preparing the four- year Master Plan for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and frequent service as a Subject Matter Expert for the Federal Government, conducting assessments and training in financial and sustainability elements for over 100 nonprofit organizations in some 20 states. Retired in 2015 so more time for enjoying my cabin with 20 rowdy grandkids.

Cabin: Built in 1926 by my grandfather and his four sons (one became a Forest Ranger), this cabin at 10,000 ft. is only summer accessible, thus heavily-utilized by my greater family. Off the grid and listed as an Isolated Cabin with no permit renewal, we successfully navigated onto the National Register of Historic Places, and subsequently received a USFS reclassification as a Recreation Residence with a 20-year permit.

National Forest Homeowners: Active on Financial, Membership, Government Liaison and Event committees. Advisor to Executive Director, Treasurer and President on issues pertaining to integrity and enhancement of NFH internal operations. Lead developer of an improved membership retention program. Initiated application to GuideStar, receiving accreditation for NFH at the Silver level of authentication and transparency for nonprofit organizations.

Gary L. Pugh, Rohnert Park, CA

East Silver Lake Tract & Improvement Association (ESLIA), CA; Eldorado NF

Family owned cabin, 62 years; 20+ year NFH Member

Qualifications and Experience: I am interested in serving as a member of the NFH BOD to help further the goals of our organization and to help ensure that the cabin program remains intact for the future generations. As a cabin participant (from 1958) and owner (2001) of our family cabin, I’ve seen many changes over the years. The one consistency throughout the generations has been the picturesque scenery of forest and cabins surrounding our lake. My goal as a BOD member is for all future generations of cabins to have that same vison to pass on, and as a BOD member I feel I could help the NFH continue to grow and serve our members.

As a retired General Contractor specializing in Green Building I was a keynote speaker at several National Building conferences across the US, a driving force and founding BOD officer on my local chapter of the USGBC. I have been on the ESLIA BOD for 8+ years, (4 as President & 4+ as NFH Liaison). During my time as President I worked with our local Ranger to peacefully resolve a major concern of boats being stored on our lake shores. I have attended NFH conferences in Sacramento, San Carlos CA and Reno NV. At these conferences I established personal contacts with several National USFS member and the conference speakers.

In closing I feel I would be a good addition to the board in furthering its goals, objectives and helping the general membership do the same.
