More About Elections

The following Frequently Asked Questions are intended to provide more information regarding the NFH Elections process.

Is there any provision made for members who do not use or have access to a computer?

Members who do not have access to the internet may request a vote-by-mail ballot by contacting the NFH Executive Director at 1-800-699-9971. Requests should be made prior to, or early in an election period to allow time for ballots to be mailed and returned prior to the end of the election period.

How are candidates selected to run for office?

Candidates for office are identified, selected, and nominated by the Nominating Committee. The slate of candidates is presented to the Board of Directors prior to the election each year.

How are potential candidates identified?

Members who may be interested in running for office can request more information and/or declare their interest by filling out a Candidate Interest form.  Nominating Committee members monitor member submissions and will contact a member to discuss their interest and qualifications. While a member can express their interest in running for office at any time, most recruitment activity takes place during the summer and fall months.  There is no obligation by the member or the Nominating Committee during these exploratory discussions.

How long do elected positions serve?

Officers and Directors serve two-year terms and can be elected to a maximum of three consecutive terms.  Director terms are staggered so approximately one half of board members are elected or reelected each year.  Nominating Committee members are also elected by NFH Members and may serve up to three consecutive one-year terms.  At least one Nominating Committee member shall have served the previous year and at least one member must be a present Director.

Are all NFH members eligible to vote?

NFH Members have voting privileges, while Associates do not.  Members include Regular Members, Regular Tract Members, and Legacy Members.  Associates are Associate Members or Associate Tract Members.

So an Associate Member has no role in NFH leadership?

While Associate members do not have voting privileges, one NFH Director position is designated as an Associate Member Director, which represents the interests of Associate members.  The Associate Member Director must be an Associate Member to be nominated and elected to this position.

When are the Election results announced?

NFH Election Results are announced as soon as votes are tabulated and certified by the NFH Elections Committee.  While votes cast online are automatically tabulated, votes by mailed ballots are manually tabulated.  With the month of March as the election period, the results are expected to be announced by email and published on the NFH website by mid-April.  Newly elected members are introduced at the annual NFH Business meeting, which takes place at the annual NFH Conference, typically near the end of April.
