I was wondering where we all stand, as far as our Forest Service permit fees. We, like many others, are finding it challenging to pay this fee. We all take care of the land that our cabins sit on, by cutting hazardous trees, keeping brush cleaned up and any other jobs that may need to be done. Do you feel that there is any chance of this fee going down in the near future? If this amount will be our new normal, I guess sadly, we will have to reconsider ownership. The thought of losing our cabin, where we have created decades of family memories, is heartbreaking. Thank you for your time.

In 2014, Congress passed the Cabin Fee Act which established a new permit fee system. Fees under the new system will not rise dramatically as they have in the past. The only future fee increase allowed is an annual adjustment for inflation.

Under the former fee system, an appraisal was done every 10 years to value the land under our cabins, which resulted in fees going up dramatically each 10-year cycle. There were also some obvious fee inequities as a result of inconsistent appraisal results. Fortunately increases were capped for 2014 and 2015, and as of 2016 the fees have been stabilized in their current tiers. While the average permit fee under the CFA was is a little lower compared to the prior system, the CFA did not roll back the steep increases that took place in the late 1990's and from 2009-2014. Although this means fees will not change downward, they are also not going to rise in the future other than the annual adjustment for inflation. Each year NFH posts the current fee tiers.
